Well, Spring has truly sprung and we have had a bumper delivery of babies so far. Our latest two, Penny & Josh, were born on Saturday to our black goat, Galia. After the last couple of years’ experience, we generally know when babies are imminent – I won’t go into too much detail, but it includes some gentle bleating and ‘lady business’! Galia had been looking fit to burst for three or four weeks, but showed no clear signs on the day of the delivery. No, she waited until we were out in Sofia with visitors and she was up in the pasture with the herd before dropping them!
Through a series of convoluted phone calls and messages, our wonderful neighbour, Mitko, received news of the new-borns. He knew we were out, so hooked up his trailer and drove up to the pasture to collect the new family and bring them home. As we pulled into the village, Mitko’s son, Stanislav flagged us down; ‘When are you going to collect your new kids? They were born up the hill this afternoon! ’ he laughed. We ran to the barn to find Galia and her babies being tended to by Mitko. How lucky we are to have such kind and thoughtful neighbours to help us in this way, we don’t know where we’d be without them.
It now appears that Florence, our breeding sow, is also pregnant again – we are hoping for some warning this time and are keeping a careful eye out for nest building!
